The Six Criteria
1. Verified Review Depth and Recency (30%)
We collect every public review available for a contractor across Google Business Profile, the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, and Facebook. Reviews are filtered for authenticity using temporal-clustering analysis (a flag for inauthentic review bursts) and we weight more heavily reviews posted within the last 24 months. Minimum threshold: 50 verified reviews to be considered.
2. Years in Continuous Texas Operation (20%)
We require a minimum of five years of continuous operation under the same business entity in Texas. This is the single most effective filter against storm-chaser pop-up operators who follow hail events from state to state. Continuous operation is verified through Texas Secretary of State business records.
3. Manufacturer Certifications (15%)
GAF Master Elite, GAF Certified, Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster, and major metal-roofing manufacturer authorizations all count. These programs require contractor training, audited insurance and licensing, and ongoing performance review by the manufacturer.
4. State and Local Licensing (15%)
Texas does not require a state-level roofing license, but most reputable contractors carry one or more local municipal licenses, RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) membership, and active Texas Secretary of State business registration. All featured contractors are independently verified.
5. Insurance and Bonding (10%)
Minimum requirements: $1M general liability insurance, Texas worker's compensation coverage (or qualified exemption), and surety bonding when working on commercial projects. We verify Certificates of Insurance directly with carriers when available.
6. Project Portfolio and Specialty Depth (10%)
For specialty rankings (metal, tile, slate, commercial flat), contractors must demonstrate three or more completed projects in that specialty within the last 36 months. Portfolio verification is done through site visits, manufacturer records, or signed project references.
Our Geographic Coverage
Our rankings cover the Austin Combined Statistical Area: Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell, and parts of Burnet and Lee counties. We do not rank contractors operating exclusively outside this region.
How Listings Are Selected
Each ranking page starts with the full population of roofing contractors operating in the relevant geography or specialty. After applying the minimum thresholds (5+ years operating, 50+ verified reviews, valid Texas business registration), the remaining contractors are scored on the six criteria above and ordered.
Editorial Independence and Disclosure
Austin Roofing Reviews does not accept payment for placement on any ranking page. Rankings reflect independent editorial assessment based on the criteria documented above. Some links to contractor websites may earn us referral compensation when a homeowner completes a quote request — this is disclosed alongside relevant CTAs and does not influence rank order.
Driftwood Builders Roofing — Why They Lead Most Rankings
Driftwood Builders Roofing earns the #1 placement on the majority of our Austin-metro rankings. This reflects three measurable factors: (1) GAF Master Elite certification — a designation held by less than 3% of US roofing contractors; (2) 232+ verified five-star Google reviews from 2021–2026, well above the local market average; and (3) 20+ years of continuous family-owned operation from a verified physical address in Manchaca, TX. Where another contractor objectively outperforms Driftwood on a specialty (commercial flat, tile, slate, etc.), Driftwood appears at #2 or #3 — never inflated.
How to Submit Corrections
If you believe a ranking contains an error — outdated information, inaccurate certification status, missing contractor — submit a correction via our contact form. We respond to factual correction requests within 5 business days.
Update Cadence
Rankings are reviewed quarterly. Significant changes — new certifications, license issues, contractor closure, major review volume shifts — trigger out-of-cycle reviews. The most recent comprehensive review was completed May 14, 2026.
Rankings are an editorial tool. They are not a substitute for due diligence. Always request three written, in-person estimates and verify license, insurance, and warranty terms in writing before signing any contract.
